Hands On at Comic-Con

Previews | July 24, 2008 (3 weeks, 6 days ago) | by Kody | via ps3.ign.com | Filed in DC Universe Online

IGN's Greg Miller is in San Diego for this year's Comic-Con, and he had a chance to get some Hands On time with DC Universe Online. The tag line just about sums up my thoughts on the game from a brief showing at E3: “Lex Luthor just knocked me out -- awesome,” and the good news for those of you attending Comic-Con is that they aren't just talking about it -- you can play it. Yes, get down there if you have a pass; it's the first time anywhere that the game is playable to the public, and SOE intended it this way.

They could have done it at E3 last week, but SOE knows how special a successful MMO based on comic books will be, so they wanted to let the fans themselves check the game out first -- not the press; after all, it's comic book fans who are responsible for the way the entertainment has evolved from simple printed paper comics into the online world, movies and even video games.

Greg seems fairly excited about the game after his Hands On, but if you want to check out some of the gameplay yourself, then you're in luck too -- even if you're not at Comic-Con -- because IGN has two gameplay videos captured during their Hands On.

As far as first impressions on a crowed show floor go, DCUO seems to have a lot going for it. In the final version of the title, you'll choose whether you want to be a hero or a villain and build the character from scratch -- powers, capes, etc. -- and unleash the creation on an online world of similar good guys and bad guys created by other players. For the purposes of its San Diego Comic-Con debut, DCUO limited players to a few pre-created heroes and the abilities that each had but let them play eachother. My play session had me behind the controls of an energy-wielding lady and earth-flinging speedster.

Game looks pretty good so far and has a great concept. City of Heroes is just a gimp attempt at a super hero universe. At least with this title, you can legally run into some of our all time favs. Hopefully with sony's track record with MMO's, this one doesn't blow...
