Dungeon Runners has Awesome Cleavage

Previews | Nov. 21, 2007 (9 months ago) | by Kody | Filed in Dungeon Runners

Sheesh, what were you thinking? This is a gaming website! Regardless, Dungeon Runners has this and much more -- as quite possibly the most hilarious and perfect parody game you'll come across. Best of all, of course, is the fact that this game is completely free to play. The game is literally filled to the brims with tongue-in-cheek humor with skills like Awesome Cleavage, Blue Screen of Life, Holy Roller, Monster Bait and Spontaneous Re-Generation.

NCsoft invited us down to Austin, Texas to check out some of the new stuff for Dungeon Runners as they prepare to blow chunks (patch new content) for the second time. While we were there, we were also let on to some tidbits of information on things to come after Chunk 2, so read on for that.

NCsoft will be adding in-game advertising to Dungeon Runners with the update, but is doing so in a non-intrusive way to the actual gameplay. Players will simply have a small banner ad at the top of their client -- outside of the play area -- as well as sometimes seeing minor ads during loading screens. The developers have tried to keep things light-hearted with the addition of funny comments on the loading screen. Third is a simple video ad that will be seen on login and logging out of the game. The good news is that Member accounts will not see any advertising what-so-ever; zilch, nada, nothing at all.

I need a Big Gulp

DR 25

Dungeon Runners is your typical hack-n-slash action RPG -- very similar to Diablo, Hellgate: London and others -- in that your primary form of sustainment in the game is through use of potions. For players who have chosen the "Guest" account option, this has proven quite tedious, as their potions did not stack -- at least not until chunk 2! In the next major update, Minor potions will become stackable, even for Guest accounts (Guest account potions stack to 5). At the same time, potion stacks will be increased to 10 for Member accounts.

Space? I've got your space right here!

Players with Member accounts will be quite happy with this bit of news. Each character will now have three bank pages, as well as guaranteed access to higher quality items. Guest accounts are getting some goodies out of this update, too -- they'll now have access to a bank slot -- whereas previously there was no bank for the free-to-play account version.

More great news for Guest accounts in this regard too. There is now a chance for Rare and Unique items to generate in a form that allows Guest account players to use them -- giving free players "limited" access, while at least giving some access to things Member accounts can obtain.

Dude, can I have your stuff?

This has no doubt been on the minds of everyone in the game. "Whoa, I've got this awesome sauce sword of smacking; wonder if anyone wants to trade for it?!" NCsoft has heard player concerns about this -- introducing Item Bartering -- a secure trade system where players open a trade window and can swap items with each other. Best of all? Players cannot trade gold, and according to Mark Tucker -- the game's Lead Designer -- they never will introduce gold trading in Dungeon Runners -- so look out farmers, this game ain't for you.

While Mark knows this won't curb all farming in the game, it only penalizes those looking to make a living off of it outside of the game -- which he's totally cool with. He doesn't want to hurt the legitimate players with this, and in my opinion it's a fantastic solution. The only other stipulation on the bartering system is that Soulbound items cannot be traded. Other than that, it's fair game on what you trade with your fellow players.

Dungeon Runners likes blowing chunks -- it won't stop with 2

Beyond Chunk 2, there is a lot of cool stuff in store for players. Mark showed us a preview of a summoned pet -- which will be the first pet accessible to players -- and it was downright hilarious. What is it, you ask? A snowman. You summon this snowman, and it fights for you like pets do in other MMOs; the major difference is you heal it with frost spells -- such as Ice Bolt. Another possible pet Mark hinted at would be none other than a lawn gnome... who wouldn't love that?

Players can also expect crafting to be added into the game with that special Dungeon Runners twist, as well as Guilds -- though not called that, because as with crafting, this is Dungeon Runners -- they do things their own way. Additionally, look out for item sets that grant bonuses based on the number of pieces in the set you're wearing, player housing, more expressions for Karl -- the experience bar -- and last, but not least: player-owned dungeons. Yeah, that's right; own your own piece of dungeony goodness.

This is a good time to mention that you can grab the Dungeon Runners client here on Curse, so if you'd like to check out the game then simply download it and login to get started. While you're here, though, stop by the Chunk 2 Preview images in our Dungeon Runners Gallery.

Mark wouldn't make any set-in-stone promises on the release of Chunk 2, but NCsoft hopes to have it out by the end of the year. This is the MMO genre, however, so you never know when things could go awry and delay a release.
